Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the title given to Mary, Mother of Jesus, in honor of her role as patroness of the Carmelite order. The original Carmelites were hermits who lived on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land from the late 12th century until the 13th century. They built a chapel in the middle of their hermitages, which they dedicated to the Holy Virgin.
